IPL: Sachin, Dhoni, Sehwag to stay on
NEW DELHI: Even as IPL teams gear up for the upcoming players auction in January, three top Indian cricketers - Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag - are set to be retained by Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils respectively
. As per IPL retention rule, this means that these players would draw a salary of at least $1.8 million per year for the next three years.
Meanwhile, sources said at least three teams out of six original franchises - Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers - are yet to take a call on whether to retain players or to shortlist them for the auction.
"The teams have begun preparing for the auction but a clear picture will emerge a couple of weeks later on who is retaining which player," an insider told TOI on Tuesday.
The new IPL retention rule says that an existing team can retain upto four players with a maximum of three Indians. For the first player a team retains, $1.8 million will be deducted from its total purse of $9 million irrespective of the salary of that player. Sums of $1.3m, $.9m $.5m will be deducted for the next three players if a team goes for it. Indian players and others who have played 75% of matches during IPL 3 will go into the auction pool. While it was clear a few months back itself that both Tendulkar and Dhoni will be retained by their teams, there was a lack of clarity on Sehwag. Sources, though, now assert that Sehwag will stay with Delhi.
Daredevils, it’s been learnt, are also keen to keep Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra. Likewise, Chennai are looking to retain Indian stars like Suresh Raina and Murali Vijay.
Salary brackets for domestic players
BCCI has come up with various categories for Indian domestic cricketers with salary brackets of Rs 10, 20 and 30 lakh per year. Those who have playing Ranji Trophy since 2005-06 season will be given Rs 30 lakh while Rs 20 lakh will be given to those who have been around 2006-07 season onwards. The Rs 10-lakh package is meant for those playing since 2009-10 season.
