A salute to Sachin

As his fans wait for the World Cup to watch the batting maestro in action, two books on Sachin Tendulkar has been launched in quick succession in Bangalore
The 2011 cricket World Cup seems to have set the stage for the launch of cricket books.  Bangalore witnessed two launches in two days and, not surprisingly, both the books are on batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar.

The similarity did not end there. Both the books, Sachin — Genius Unplugged edited by the famous cricket writer, columnist and author Suresh Menon and Sach penned down by sport scribe Gautam Bhattacharya had Sachin’s long time dressing room mates, Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid as guests to do the honours.

Sachin — Genius Unplugged is a collection of essays by some of the finest writers on cricket. The book as such does not dwell on Sachin’s on field displays and statistics, and has chapters penned by Harsha Bogle, Ayaz Memon, Peter Roebuck, Bishen Singh Bedi, R Mohan among some top writers.

Rahul Dravid who has shared the dressing room the longest with the batting Maestro, a whopping unbeaten 127 Tests, handed over the first copy to former team mate Anil Kumble. “It is a privilege to be here today to release a book on one of my favourite cricketers. I have known Suresh as long as I have known Sachin. I had a look at this book and the wide range of writers who have contributed is a reflection of the respect that Suresh has among his writing colleagues. I am sure this book should inspire a lot of youngsters, especially young cricketers,” said Rahul Dravid.

When it came time for Anil to talk, the former India skipper and current President of the KSCA said, “Actually, Rahul has said whatever I planned to say. I guess this is the right batting order… like Rahul said, I have known Suresh as long as I have known Sachin. It was a honour to play alongside him for more than 100 Tests.”

“Suresh has never minced his words and has always said what he had to say.”

Explaining how the idea of the book sprouted, Suresh said, “One day I was having a conversation with my friend Satyanarayana and the idea cropped up to do a Sachin book. It took a long while after that. When we finally got down to this, we thought about a collection of essays. The brief to the writers was two-fold — keep it professional and also personalise it and narrate some anecdotes. This book will please both types of readers — those who read from cover to cover like me and those that dip in here and dip in there.

The book, published by KRAB Media is priced at Rs 599, and will be available to the public from Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Having published a horde of Bengali books, Gautam’s  English debut Sach – has foreword written by current Indian team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, 83 interviews with individuals, an exclusive with former Indian coach Greg Chappel, 40 never-before answers by the Master and coach Gary Kirsten’s take on how Sachin prepares before each game.

Speaking at the launch, Kirsten said, “To me, Sachin is the greatest sporting role model I have ever seen.”

Anil Kumble said, “I don’t think anyone has touched more people than Sachin”.

Kumble released the English edition of the book while Dravid and Dhoni did the honors for the Hindi edition.
