Sachin Tendulkar Gets His Favorite Chops & Curries In Perth
He's the Indian cricket team's secret weapon. Highgate chef Gogo Govardhan's curries have been sustaining the subcontinent's Test cricketers for more than a decade of Australian tours and the current tour is no exception.
Govardhan has gone on tour with the team, preparing meals in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne and he'll be behind the stoves during the Perth Test, starting tomorrow.
His lamb chops are the stuff of legend and a favourite with the Indians. Govardhan famously air-freighted 200 of his Indian spiced chops to Mumbai in 2004 for a private party for Indian star Sachin Tendulkar.
"The chops, from local provider Western Meatpackers, are so soft and beautiful, you could kiss them," Govardhan said.
"I've been cooking for the players in WA for many years and when the Indian team comes in to WA, I look after their lunches and dinners for each day of the Test. It's not all curries, though. I have to cook a highly controlled protein and carbohydrate diet. Sachin loves the chops and the curries, but he also loves Japanese teriyaki and sashimi."
With different regional and religious backgrounds, the Indians are hard to cook for.
"I have to cook for team members from southern, northern and central India and across differing dietary requirements," he said.
Govardhan, who runs Gogo's Madras Curry House, also cooks for the Australian team when they are in town. "The Australian players love my lamb shanks," he said. "Matthew Hayden has put my shank recipe in his cookbook."
