CLT20: Sachin Tendulkar resumes training after undergoing hand surgery

Senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has started batting in the nets and is looking forward to the Champions League Twenty20 after recuperating from a surgery for a hand injury sustained during the Indian Premier League this year.

"Yes. I had surgery on my hand for the injury I sustained during the IPL match in May. I have already started batting in the nets since last ten days and I am looking forward to the Champions League," said Tendulkar on Saturday when asked about news reports that he underwent a surgery in London last month.

Champions League T20 tournament is scheduled to be held in different Indian cities from September 21 to October 6, with the qualifiers scheduled from September 17.

The 40-year-old batsman, who has retired from ODIs and T20 internationals, has not played a game since injuring his hand on May 13 when batting and retiring hurt with an unbeaten 38 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He missed the Mumbai Indians' last five games.

In his absence, Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL title when they vanquished two-time winners Chennai Super Kings in the final at Kolkata on May 26.

bassTendulkar, now primed to play only Test matches, is all set to complete another milestone in his illustrious career when India visits South Africa at the end of this year. The highest run-getter and century maker in both ODIs and longest form of the game is two matches adrift of appearing in 200 Test matches.

Complete List of Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI,Tests & IPL Records

As Cricinfo Says  “Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific runmaker of all time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon the game has ever known. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses - anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient at each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will”

I looked up to see which people and he was pointing to some of his fellow cricketers. I won't name which ones. You make your conclusion," Sushil said with a wink.

Sachin Tendulkar's views on selection misunderstood, says Sourav Ganguly

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday said batting master Sachin Tendulkar's comment that selectors need to look beyond statistics while picking fresh talents has been blown out of context.

"I was there when he made the comments and also read his interview. It has been completely blown out of context. it was a completely harmless statement made by Sachin. He said it in a completely different context," Ganguly said on the sidelines of a programme here.

Two days back, Tendulkar had courted a controversy when he said selectors needed to give importance to a player's skills and ability to absorb pressure, rather than going by the scorebook.

"It's about vision. When it comes to selection, one has to analyse a player. Even if he fails in a few matches, one needs to see if he has the ability to withstand pressure and execute at the international level. I have seen players who are exceptionally good at the domestic level not being able to perform as well in international cricket," Tendulkar had said at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in Bangalore on Saturday.

Ganguly, and other Indian captains like Mohammed Azharuddin, Radhul Dravid and Anil Kumble were also present at the Bangalore function.

On Tendulkar's likely 200th Test appearance in the coming South Africa trip, Ganguly said the record would be unbreakable.

"It would be an unbelievable achievement. I dont think it will be possible to break that record," he said after inaugurating "Sahanubhuti", a benefit exhibition of paintings and sculptures for rehabilitation of Uttarakhand flash flood victims at Emami Chisel Art gallery.

1Ganguly also hoped India would do well in South Africa.

"India have done well in last 4-5 months, So there is a lot to hope, for South Africa provides the best bowling conditions and I hope India have a good season there".

The talismanic cricketer said he has not shown any disrespect to stylish former Indian batsman V.V.S. Laxman by naming him the 12th man of a dream Test team he chose during an interaction with a television channel.

"Selecting such a team doesn't mean showing disrespect to any player. It doesn't make any player bigger or smaller."

Ganguly denied reports that he may participate in a dance reality show.

"It's completely news for me. I can't dance, only my wife can, I am not a part of any such programme," he added.

Video: *Panel Discussion* Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly & Rahul Dravid at KSCA Platinum Jubilee Event

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said the changes brought into cricket, including the Twenty20 format, has made the sport more exciting and helped generate excitement in Test matches.

"Cricket is the only sport to have three formats and its only getting more exciting not only for players but also for spectators. There is creativity and more results are coming by (in longer version of the game). The batsmen are willing to take chances ...," he said on Saturday.

"T20 matches have brought innovation to the game. When it comes to Test cricket you need to adjust and no two players are similar, technique wise. Players have to stick to their basics, that is important," Sachin added. "T20 is only format where you can become a hero in three or four deliveries."

"You have to learn to play a few shots in Tests these days. You just can't block and block, which was the norm earlier," he said(PTI)

Twenty20 cricket has made the sport more exciting: Sachin Tendulkar

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said the changes brought into cricket, including the Twenty20 format, has made the sport more exciting and helped generate excitement in Test matches.

"Cricket is the only sport to have three formats and its only getting more exciting not only for players but also for spectators. There is creativity and more results are coming by (in longer version of the game). The batsmen are willing to take chances ...," he said on Saturday.

"You have to learn to play a few shots in Tests these days. You just can't block and block, which was the norm earlier," he said.

5"Good players learn to adapt and players like Chris Gayle, Michael Hussey or  AB de Villiers dominate in all formats. So, we need to have our basics right," he said.

Tendulkar also added that the implementation of technology has benefited the sport. "I wondered how this technology would help us learn cricket, but over the period of time figured out its importance. It helped us plan our innings."

Tendulkar also said that the first thing he would do as a selector is to analyse whether the player has the potential to withstand pressure, despite failures at the international level.

"Selection is not about looking at the scorebook. A selector can pick players who have scored heavily. But that does not always work out. For the past many years that I have been part of the Indian cricket, I have seen players who were exceptionally good at domestic level, but somehow could not replicate it on the international stage," he said.

Dravid Talks about Coach Ramakant Achrekar & Sachin Tendulkar

Former India captain Rahul Dravid today said young and budding cricketers should vouch for mentors not coaches to develop themselves as a worldclass players.

"Young players should be looking at mentors not coaches. A lot of youngsters think that they will make themselves a world-class players through coaching academies," he said at the Club Day organised by KSCA on the occasion of Platinum Jubilee celebrations here.

Dravid said coaching is a task-oriented job and mentoring is relationship-oriented. "Coaches focus on concrete issues of the game but mentors go beyond what coaches do. Their focus is on matters including self-confidence and self-perception," he explained.

"Coach Ramakant Achrekar never stuffed techinal aspects of the game in young Sachin Tendulkar's mind. Instead he gave him opportunities to play games almost everyday and made him bat for five hours in the nets which made him what he is today. In real sense, he was a mentor not a coach to the Mumbaikar," he said.

Former fast bowler Javagal Srinath said players should look at coaching only it is required to correct technical faults.

rama"They should interact more with senior players as Rahul used to do with G R Vishwanath and Syed Kirmani while travelling in a train to play Ranji matches," he said.

To make his point, Srinath gave the example of Australian great Dennis Lilee's interaction with him at the MRF camp at Chennai.

"When I reached MRF training camp a week ahead of Lillee's arrival. The coach there, after watching me bowl at the nets, ruled me out that I could not bowl," he said.

"But in came Lilee and he immediately found the problem and came up to me and asked whether I had bowled for the last six months? The great Australian great hit the bull's eye and said nobody on this earth could bowl at right areas without playing for the last six months. That was enough and gained confidence. Now, this is the type of coaching is required," Srinath said.
