Cricketing World Salutes Sachin Tendulkar after Mumbai Indians CLT20 2013 Victory

Sachin Tendulkar is still as fit as a fiddle and can carry on playing at the highest level for as long as he wants to, says his Mumbai Indians team mate Dinesh Karthik.
"It is incredible that Sachin paaji looks as fit as he has ever been. His work ethic remains the same as it was 10 years ago when I made my debut. I have been lucky to spend time with him while playing for Mumbai Indians and India. Even after so many years, he is totally involved in the game," Karthik told IANS on Monday, a day after Tendulkar played his last match in coloured clothing.

The packed house at Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday (October 6) evening was treated to some serious hitting in the final of the Champions League Twenty20 2013, with the two teams - Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals - scoring 371 runs between them. In the end, however, the all-star Mumbai batting line-up had more firepower than their Rajasthan counterparts and sealed a 33-run win. The Rajasthan chase fell apart after staying on course for 16 of their 20 overs. Mumbai, and their captain Rohit Sharma, now have the double for 2013 in their kitty, after adding the CLT20 title to their IPL VI trophy. (WISDEN INDIA)

Sachin Tendulkar can carry on for long, says Dinesh Karthik

Sachin Tendulkar is still as fit as a fiddle and can carry on playing at the highest level for as long as he wants to, says his Mumbai Indians team mate Dinesh Karthik.

"It is incredible that Sachin paaji looks as fit as he has ever been. His work ethic remains the same as it was 10 years ago when I made my debut. I have been lucky to spend time with him while playing for Mumbai Indians and India. Even after so many years, he is totally involved in the game," Karthik told IANS on Monday, a day after Tendulkar played his last match in coloured clothing.

Fittingly for the occasion, Mumbai Indians won the Champions League T2O beating Rajasthan Royal here Sunday night. It was the last competitive match for another India great Rahul Dravid.

The focus as always remains on Tendulkar, who is set to play his 200th Test at home against the West Indies next month.

Omgsachin7"He (Tendulkar) and Rahul bhai have done great service to Indian cricket. Even when he (Tendulkar) is not playing a match, it is really important to have him around in the dressing room. It is amazing how humble and approachable he is," said Karthik adding that it would not be appropriate for anyone to speculate on the batting legend's retirement.

Talking about himself, Karthik said he was confident of making a comeback to the Indian team in the near future. The 28-year-old has been replaced by Yuvraj Singh for the first three one-dayers in the home series against Australia.

"Touchwood, I will be selected again. There is no point thinking about selection matters. Motivation is never an issue for me and the priority now is to do well in domestic cricket," said Karthik, who will return to Delhi later in the month, when he represents Tamil Nadu against Services in Ranji Trophy.

Sourav Ganguly Salutes Sachin Tendulkar after Mumbai Indians CLT20 Victory

Observing that Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from international cricket was "imminent", former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday hoped the batting legend quits the game on a high.

"There is too much speculation about his retirement, which is putting pressure on him. While I believe his retirement is not very far, I hope he bids adieu with his bat held high. He should leave the game only after playing a match-wining knock," said Ganguly.

Ganguly wished that Tendulkar, who on Sunday played career's last Twenty20 match with his Mumbai Indians winning the Champions League Twenty20 title, repeats the same feat with India triumphing over the visiting West Indies against whom he is slated to play his historic 200th Test Match.

"Sachin's achievements and credentials won't be lowered if he continues to play for some more time. But I sincerely hope is he quits the game only after playing well, be it against the West Indies or South Africa," said Ganguly.

Hailing Harbhajan Singh for his match winning abilities, Ganguly hoped the offspinner would make a comeback to the Indian team sooner than later.

Omgsachin8"Harbhajan is a match winner. His biggest trait is his ability to perform when the chips are down. There are no doubts about his class and sooner than later he will be back in the Indian team," he said.

Harbhajan clinched the Man of the Match award for his match-winning performance in Sunday's Champions League T20 final. The offie clinched three wickets in the 17th over to turn the match in his side's favour and ended with figures of 4/32 from four overs.

I have been inspired by Sachin Tendulkar's exploits, says Rahul Dravid

Playing for one last time together in a cricket match, albeit for different teams in the Champions League Twenty20 summit clash here, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid on Sunday heaped encomiums on each other with the latter saying that his long time former India team-mate had inspired him to strive for excellence in the game.

Tendulkar's final T20 act and Dravid's last hurrah in competitive cricket were the talking points at the Feroz Shah Kotla here as the two legends got together though in the colours of Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals. The two legendary batsmen had announced that this would be their final Twenty20 season.

"Even though Tendulkar is of my age or two months younger to me, he is seven years senior to me as an international cricketer. When I came into the Indian team, in my third Test, Tendulkar was India captain. He was someone you would look up to as a young cricketer growing up. You saw this young kid do amazing things across the world. It was sort of inspiration for all of us playing first-class cricket," Dravid said before the start of the CLT20 finale.

"It was like, look if this guy can do it, we can also try to do it. The opportunity to try and share a dressing room with him, that was a huge motivation. For me to be on that England trip for the first time and share a dressing with him was a huge trip," said Dravid.

The 40-year-old Dravid had retired from international cricket at the beginning of 2012 while Tendulkar, who retired from One-Day Internationals last December, is in the twilight of his Test career. Together they have scored close to 92,000 runs in all formats of the game.

Tendulkar, who is also 40, returned the compliments, by describing Dravid as the 'master technician'.

The two cricket legends played together for the country for 16 years but rarely they have played against each other.

Omgsachin6Asked about this, Dravid, who is leading the Rajasthan Royals side, said, "I can't remember playing against Sachin in Ranji Trophy for Karnataka versus Mumbai. Only played against him in West Zone versus South Zone. All our contests have been in coloured clothing, surprisingly, in spite of the fact that we played for so many years together. So one final time it is always great to play against Sachin."

Tendulkar also said that he would cherish this moment.

"I remember Rahul being part of Wills Trophy team when I was his captain but we played in whites. That was the first time I saw Rahul. I think it was way back in 1993-94 and since then we have been in whites and colours but playing in same team," he said.

"This is rare moment where we two actually get to play against each other in colour clothing, obviously in IPL. But on any other platform we have not been able to play against each other in whites and that would have been something special," said the senior batsman who is standing on the cusp of playing his 200th Test.

I wasn't aware that I was close to 50,000 runs, says Sachin Tendulkar

A few moments after crossing 50,000 runs in competitive cricket across all formats, Sachin Tendulkar called himself "a little superstitious" and said he was not aware of the impending landmark till it beamed on the big screen at the Feroz Shah Kotla here on Saturday.

Tendulkar reached the coveted landmark when he tucked one towards midwicket for a single off left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley, as Mumbai Indians defeated Trinidad & Tobago to make the final of the Champions League Twenty20.

Coming into this match, he needed 26 runs to reach the landmark.

"I wasn't aware that I was close to 50000, I only saw it on the big screen when I was two runs short," Tendulkar said after the semifinal match. Talking about the match, he said, "It was a good performance by us after (Dwayne) Smithy gave us a good start. Overall, a terrific performance. It's fun to watch him hit those balls hard. I told him I am not backing up too far as I might get hit by his shots." The veteran batsman said the win over Perth Scorchers in their last group game was crucial.

"I thought that the crunch moments came against Scorchers where we chased very well."

Omgsachin3Asked about his team, Tendulkar said, "I am a little superstitious, so I don't like speaking about my own team (on his team's chances in the final against Rajasthan Royals).

Talking about the pitch at the Kotla, he said, "It is on the slower side. You have got to understand what the wicket does, it's different from Rajasthan."

And about the spirited T&T side, he said, "T&T are a dangerous side and they play the format very well. They have proved themselves in the past. I was glad that (Kieron) Pollard and Smithy were on our side. We held our nerves well."

Asked about his body, Tendulkar said, "All 'parts' are well and I am enjoying."

Tendulkar now has 50009 runs in 953 competitive matches, which includes 551 List A matches, 307 First-class matches and 95 T20 games.

Tendulkar has scored 25,228 runs in 307 First-class matches, including 15,837 runs in 198 Tests.

The 40-year-old has 21,999 runs in 551 List A matches which includes 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs.

Having scored 2747 in the 94 earlier T20 matches, the legend today scored the necessary 26 runs with consummate ease.

Want to see Sachin Tendulkar play forever, says Aussie pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile

Just like any other young cricketer, Australian speedster Nathan Coulter-Nile is in awe of Sachin Tendulkar and does not want the senior India batsman to retire from the game.

Plying his trade for the Mumbai Indians franchise, for Coulter-Nile, Tendulkar is one player who is more than willing to give an insight about the game to the younger lot.

"Sachin is someone who believes in backing one's own ability. He has got all the talent in the world and whenever I speak to him he always gives insights as to where I should bowl and what the batsmen would be trying to look at while bowling to them," said Coulter-Nile.

"He gives an insight into what the batsmen would be thinking about when I am running up to bowl at them, which is something I really appreciate. I would want to see him play forever, but unfortunately all good things have to come to an end and hopefully we can get the Champions League trophy for him and give him a perfect send-off," he told the CLT20.com.

Coulter-Nile, who picked up three wickets in his side's six-wicket win over Perth Scorchers in the Champions League match here last night, which helped them cruise into the semi-finals of the tournament, said he was scared of bowling to Tendulkar in the nets.

"I am scared to bowl to Sachin in the nets because he absolutely whacks them. It is not something that I would have imagined doing in my life. It has been fantastic and I never really felt I would be here," he said.

The 25-year-old said it's the best learning curve for him ahead of the ODI series against India.

Omgsachin2"Absolutely. It is good to get used to the conditions here and bowl to the few guys who are in the Indian side who will be playing the ODI series. I am looking to use this experience and bowl well," he said.

He said it was an unbelievable win for them against Scorchers and was feeling relieved after qualifying for the semis.

"It is a good feeling to have a win and qualify for the semi-finals. To be honest with you, I was not too sure about that run-chase. It was a tough run-chase and the boys did it quite easily. When you lose a man like Tendulkar early in the innings, you do get a bit tense. But then such is the power of our batting that if one guy is out, you always have someone who can keep it going."

Coulter-Nile singled out skipper Rohit Sharma for playing an outstanding innings under pressure.

"Rohit is probably one of the best players in the world. I am not looking forward to bowling to him in the next one-day international series, but if he keeps his form up for the next two matches, I would be happy."

Rohit Sharma hopes Sachin Tendulkar plays a match-winning knock in semis

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is not at all worried about Sachin Tendulkar's ongoing bad patch in the Champions League Twenty20 and wants the senior batsman to deliver a winning knock in their likely semi-final clash against Chennai Super Kings

"It's not a worry for us because we all know how many runs he has scored and how much experience he has with him. He is hitting the ball well and it was an unfortunate dismissal today. It's not easy when you were chasing 149-run target in 14.2 overs with run-rate of 11 an over," said Sharma after the 6-wicket win over Perth Scorchers in New Delhi on Wednesday.

"I am not really concerned about his form. I am sure, with the amount of runs he has scored, he can deliver for us any time and I hope he does it in the semi-final against CSK," Sharma said in the post-match press conference.

Sharma said Mumbai need to carry the winning momentum against CSK in the semi-finals and need to be at their best to put it across two-time IPL champions.

"They are a good team. I won't call them dangerous side but a good team  and we need to be at our best against them. If you look at head-to-head encounters, we have beaten them on more occasions. It's an important game for us and we need to carry the winning momentum into the semis."

Omgsachin3"We played well today to win this game and we have 3-4 days gap before our semi-final. I want everyone to start contributing from now on with an important match ahead," said Sharma.

The Mumbai captain seemed satisfied with the performance of his wards but need them to improve on the fielding front.

"It's a good performance as we have to achieve the target in 14.2 overs. It was a good wicket to bat on and we knew as a batting unit what we needed to do. We always wanted to chase and everybody played his role in the team's victory. Happy with how things have turned out for us."

"We were sloppy in the field and we did not field well as a unit. We need to improve upon that. All guys played well and hope they contribute in the match ahead."

Sachin has helped me become a better cricketer : Pollard

Kieron Pollard's approach towards life is very similar to his cricket - uncomplicated.

While cricketers across the world love to make right noises about how much they love playing Test cricket, the 26-year-old Mumbai Indians all-rounder is very practical about choices he has made and firmly stands by it.

"You make decisions in life. The point when I started playing top-level cricket to this day, T20 is the cricket that I have made my name in. I don't have any regrets having played only 24 first-class matches till date. It is a business as well and I have to look after my family and live as well," Pollard told PTI in an exclusive interview here on Wednesday.

Apart from being a star performer for MI in IPL, Pollard has played for Somerset in England, Big Bash in Australia, Bangladesh Premier League and the Caribbean Premier League.

But does the tag of T20 freelancer hurts him, Pollard gave a pointed reply, "If people want to call me T20 freelancer, that's their opinion. I can't do anything about it. If I try to change everything, I will be trying to change the whole world. For me, it's just a matter of what I am supposed to do and that is playing whatever format I get to play."

The giant of an all-rounder felt that his stint with Mumbai Indians has made him a better cricketer.

"Four years with Mumbai Indians has been a learning experience for me. The best part is that players come and go in other teams but at Mumbai Indians, the core of the team has been same for the last four years. We have enjoyed each other's success," said Pollard, who has played 85 ODIs and 37 T20 Internationals for his country.

On the technical aspects, Pollard believed that he has become a better batsman against slow bowlers during his stint with Mumbai Indians.

"Earlier, whenever I would come into bat, the opposition captain would immediately bring in a spinner. It has changed now as they normally don't bring a spinner when I come into bat. Although I still get out but, if the slow bowlers keep it in my arc, I am ready to hit it out of sight. My regular visits to India has given me a lot of confidence to play in front of big crowds," Pollard added.

pollyuTalk of playing for Mumbai Indians and the importance of Sachin Tendulkar's presence comes up for discussion.

"Sachin has helped me become a better cricketer with a lot of technical inputs but I would prefer keeping it to myself. For me, it's a sheer joy watching him enjoy those grueling training sessions even at this age. His work ethic is something that I have always respected."

They have played together for the West Indies side but by Pollard's own admission, he doesn't get intimidated while bowling to Chris Gayle.

"I have got Gayle out during Big Bash. Whenever I am bowling to Gayle, I always back myself to get him out. I really don't lose my sleep over whether I would go for 20 runs when he (Gayle) is batting.

"But yes, if I am hit for 20, I know that I am not the first one to get that treatment from him and certainly not the last one either," smiles Pollard while speaking about Jamaican marauder.

Pics : Sachin Tendulkar in action against Perth Scorchers, Kotla OCT 2,2013

It needed something special to peg Mumbai back, and that came in the form of a spectacular diving catch. Smith had smashed Brad Hogg's first delivery over midwicket for a six and was well positioned to do the same to the next one - a long hop. He didn't connect too well though, and Behrendorff pulled off a stunner at the square-leg fence, Smith gone for 48 in 25 balls.
But with Rohit at his six-hitting best, he hit four of them in his unbeaten 51 in 24 balls, Kieron Pollard joining in with an 18-ball 23 before falling 13 runs short of the target and Ambati Rayudu finishing things off with consecutive sixes off Agar, Perth were subdued easily. A semifinal spot had been booked, Mumbai were exactly where they believed they would be before the tournament started, and the same questions about Tendulkar were set to be asked again, and answered again, on Saturday at the same venue.(Courtesy : NDTV/WISDEN INDIA)

Sachin’s approach towards the game is still the same : John Wright

Mumbai Indians coach John Wright was also all praise for Tendulkar, saying he had always kept things simple and youngsters must learn from him.

"I had seen him first as 16-year-old opponent when India played New Zealand in a Test match and later when I became India's coach in 2000," said Wright.

"I have seen him closely for years. I feel he has never changed his approach towards the game and this is one of the reasons for his huge success. The youngsters can learn from him. It is good to see that he has the same approach even now.

"He has kept things simple. He looks keen and fresh," he added.

Refusing to be dragged into the controversy regarding Tendulkar's 200th Test and his retirement, Rohit said, "I wish he does well in the CLT20 and I don't know what happens in future."

Mumbai Indians will play well for Sachin Tendulkar, says captain Rohit Sharma

With Sachin Tendulkar set to appear in his final Champions League T20, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma today said the team will look to put its best foot forward in its quest to win the tournament for the veteran's batsman.

"We know perhaps this is Sachin's last Twenty20 tournament and we want to play good cricket for him," Rohit said while talking to reporters ahead of Mumbai Indians' campaign opener against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

Rohit admitted that Rajasthan would be a tough team to beat and Mumbai would need to play to their potential.

"We might be a bit rusty but so would be Rajasthan Royals, though they have home advantage. They have been successful at their own backyard. They are a good team and have qualified for this league. It would be a tough task but we will have to play up to our potential."

Stating that the team will be missing the services of Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, who has opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons, Rohit said, "He is a match winner with his deadly yorkers and big hitting ability. We will surely miss him but we have the depth to cope with his absence."
