PHOTOS : Sachin Tendulkar's Farewell Test Knock - Wankhede Stadium

The magician called Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar on Friday ensured that it was a farewell that each and every Indian will remember for posterity as the country's greatest sporting icon walked into the sunset with a knock which exhibited just why he is the greatest of this era.

In his 200th and last Test match, Tendulkar showed how a genius can keep overwhelming emotions under control as he scored a majestic 74 in what will probably be his last international innings.
The numbers mattered for the uninitiated but for those who loved the man for the last 24 years, each and every stroke that came out from that blade was a celebration. His 74 came off 118 balls with 12 boundaries. (PTI)

As a mark of respect, Banerjee also presented Tendulkar with a turban, which the former India captain Sourav Ganguly put on the iconic batsman's head.

PHOTOS : Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly releases 199 Balloons as a Tribute to the Little Master

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who so far had an uneventful outing playing his 199th Test match at the Eden Gardens, on Friday shared some lighter moment with former India captain Sourav Ganguly, during a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) event at tea break to mark the maestro's final appearance at the iconic ground.

On the third day, the CAB organised release of tri-coloured balloons attached to pictures of Tendulkar from across the ground. While rest of the bunch of balloons took off, the one being released by the maestro and his onetime opening partner Ganguly failed to rise.

Both Ganguly and Tendulkar then gave a push to make the balloons go up. The batting greats were then seen sharing a hearty laugh after the balloons finally set sail.

While Tendulkar — the batsman — failed to rise up to the expectation of the crowd, falling cheaply in India's first innings, his much cheered three-over stint in the West Indies' second innings too went fruitless as he gave away 18 runs without any success.

In the first innings though he took a wicket which sent ripples of joy into the spectators watching the genius in action for the last time at the hallowed ground.(IANS)

PHOTOS : Sachin Tendulkar in action during Day 2 of his 199th Test, Eden Gardens

If Twitteratis are to be believed, it will be a long shot for umpire Nigel Llong to get out of the country without facing irate fans of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar who was given out in a contentious decision on Thursday.

A pindrop silence descended on the Eden as Llong raised his finger while the Windies players jumped in joy on the second day of the first cricket Test between India and the West Indies here.

The crowd was cheering every move of the cricketing genius since he came out to bat. The entire stadium rose as Tendulkar made the long walk back to the pavilion, but the ovation was tinged with sadness.

Facing offie Shane Shillingford, Tendulkar tried to defend from his crease and the ball straightened past the outside edge and hit the back leg quite high. Tendulkar, who has been the victim of dubious decisions on a number of occasions earlier, went out silently but anguish and pain were writ large on his face.

Even English cricketer Michael Vaughan hinted at the anger of Kolkata fans well-known for considering cricket as a religion. (IANS)

It was Sachin Tendulkar written all over the Eden Gardens as thousands of his fans from all walks of life poured in to watch the batting legend in action one last time at the ground in his penultimate and 199th Test match.

Office-goers, who took leaves, and school and college students, who missed their classes, were welcomed at the stadium with large Tendulkar posters, which quoted the champion batsman as saying: "Enjoy your game and chase your dreams, because dreams do come true".

Die-hards fans walked in with 'Sachin' painted on their faces in tri-colours. Among those in attendance were Tendulkar's wife Anjali and son Arjun, who came from Mumbai to cheer him for the second last time.

The toss started amid chants of 'Sachin, Sachin' but fans were left disappointed as India lost the toss and West Indies chose to bat first in the opening Test of the two-match series. Half of the seats in the 65,000 capcity Eden were empty.
On hearing the news, many fans chose to stay away from today's proceedings as they wanted to watch their favourite cricketer bat for the last time at the historic Eden Gardens.(PTI)
